Hurray! Open Source Software! We love it!
Really? I’m not a tech guy nor do I play one on TV, but all the hype about how easy WordPress and other similar stuff makes your life easy is overstated, at best. My latest escapade into herding cats is trying to manage the umpteen plugins I have running on my site by myself. Kill me now, but outsourcing is for me.
I’ve created a website that has plugins, those little bolt on attachments all created by different authors and updated at different times, coming out of the wazoo! I have plugins for…
- affiliate ad postings
- similar blog posts
- social media buttons
- form generation
- spam protection
- column creation
That’s just to name a few. As you in the web development world laugh at me now, you already know what this does to speed of my site. No worries! I can fix that too with…
They all work together and are as much on the same page as the PLO and the Israelis, fighting for domination on my site server! Hey web developers, check this…
BRING BACK MS FRONT PAGE
Give me software that isn’t unlimmited in options and the potential for error and the white paint that Daddy told his little boy found its way onto his hairline would have never figuratively spilled in the first place.
The Epiphany of Outsourcing
This whole thing made me realize that my cat herding is stupid activity. I’m good at helping companies with their sales, getting organic traffic to small business websites, at making cool videos for service firms, and generating LinkedIn profiles that draw attention. I am a mess at web coding, design, and figuring out technolgy. And frankly, even the stuff I am fairly good at, like writing my own web copy, can use work and takes me too freaking long to do!
A cloud descends upon me as I realize the answer:
OUTSOURCE ALL THE STUFF I CANNOT DO VERY, VERY WELL!
Have you come to this realization yet? Keep doing what you’re doing DIY guy, and you will when you realize the kid whose diapers you changed yesterday can kick your a&$ and take the car keys today, and you didn’t even notice that growth spurt.
Need help with that new project? Find an outsource project manager (Hey, I know one). Can never find time to get those social media profiles doing anything but occupying space? Find a gal or guy who lives and breathes that stuff and get ‘er done. Get stuck forever developing a blog for your site? You can outsource the blog writing with a ghost blogger and no one will even know!
So now, I am actively getting bids on copywriting, new website design using a custom WordPress theme that has all the stuff that I plugin to it now (like little voodoo pins I tell ya), logo and ad design, and I’ll think of a bunch more before it’s all said and done.
Now I just need to get back to rewiring my crawl space without any electrical training. It will save me money. I swear it.
SO WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR YOUR SMALL BUSINESS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T BE DOING? TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CATS.
