karl walinskas, small business consultantsKarl Walinskas is the CEO and Founder of Smart Company Growth, and has spent a career honing skills that have culminated in this company.  A degreed Mechanical Engineer from the University of Maryland, he began his career at IBM when it was a very different company, based on hardware rather than consulting.  He obtained his Professional Engineer’s license more than two decades ago and has, in his words, “proudly never stamped a drawing.”  Karl’s career turned toward smaller companies, even startups, where he initially became a management consultant to small manufacturing firms, and  in the past ten years plus he has served as Director, Vice President, or Chief Operating Officer of functions ranging from Sales to Engineering to Operations to Supply Chain Management and all points in between.  He has worked for businesses ranging in total sales of $1 million to $88 million, primarily B2B and predominantly engaged in manufacturing either consumer products or systems and equipment.  This diversity of business experience, both vertically in industry and horizontally across function, has provided a global overview of how small business operates that Karl now brings to Smart Company Growth.

Karl has additionally been a professional speaker, speech coach, trainer and facilitator in the fields of Business Communications and Leadership, getting formal training in the art as a member of the National Speaker’s Association (NSA).  A frequent contributor to business journals, industry periodicals, trade association magazines, and internet sites including America Online, and author of Getting Connected Through Exceptional Leadership and the Selling Solutions audioprogram (see Amazon archives), Karl has been writing for business for many years, blogging before blogging was cool.

With the goal in mind of working on the business rather than for the business, Karl has adapted the virtual business model to allow for much more time working for his customers, less time in non-purposeful travel, and more time with his family.  He lives on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Maryland with his wife and son, and can be found boating, waterskiing, and Daddying if you need him.
